A Growth Mindset Matters

The Power of Mindset in Your Horsemanship Journey

Mindset: It’s not something tangible, yet it influences every aspect of our lives, including our horsemanship journey. Whether you’re just starting out, have spent decades with horses, or are a seasoned competitor, your mindset is a lever that can either propel you forward or hold you back.

One of the most striking things I’ve noticed when working with horsewomen is how easy it is for us to cling to what we think we’re doing wrong. These moments, even if fleeting, can feel as though they define us. They stick to our minds like static cling, overshadowing all the good we’ve accomplished.

But here’s the reality: unless you’ve had a truly disastrous day, most of what you did was probably right. Focusing solely on our perceived shortcomings is not only unproductive but also a disservice to ourselves and the progress we’ve made.

So how do we break free from this mindset trap?

  1. Acknowledge the Negative, Then Shift the Focus:
When a mistake or less-than-perfect moment pops into your mind, pause. Set it aside for a moment and list five things you did do well in that scenario. Once you’ve shifted your mindset, return to the mistake with fresh eyes. Instead of mulling over it, identify two things you learned and how you can implement them moving forward.

  2. Embrace the Process of Learning:
Mistakes, fumbling, and even outright failures are part of horsemanship. They’re learning moments, not verdicts on your capabilities. Remember, even with the best knowledge and tools, sometimes we’re simply figuring out how to communicate in a way our horse understands.

  3. Practice Self-Compassion:
You’re a student of the horse, always learning and growing. Even with the best intentions, there will be times when you hesitate, make a misstep, or need to adjust. Your horse forgives these mistakes, so why not offer yourself the same grace?

Remember, the journey with horses is as much about personal growth as it is about skill-building. Celebrate what you’re doing right and use each challenge as a stepping stone to becoming the best horsewoman you can be.
